Transmission Service & Repair
Slipping, hard shifts, leaks or a warning light? We diagnose the cause and explain your options, from a fluid service to replacement, before any work starts.
Transmission problems don't always mean a new transmission. Low or burnt fluid, a leaking cooler line, a failed sensor or a software issue can cause symptoms that feel much worse than they are. We start with diagnosis so you know what you're dealing with.
Signs of transmission trouble
- Slipping, flaring RPM or delayed engagement into drive or reverse
- Harsh, late or erratic shifts
- Red or brown fluid under the vehicle
- Burnt smell, or dark fluid
- Check engine or transmission warning light, or limp mode
- Shudder at light throttle (often torque converter related)
- Overheating when towing
What we do
- Scan for transmission codes and review live data
- Fluid level and condition check, and fluid and filter service
- Leak repair: pan gaskets, cooler lines, seals
- Sensor, solenoid and wiring diagnosis
- Transmission cooler service and replacement
- Repair or replacement recommendations when a unit is worn out, with the choices and costs explained before work begins
Towing and diesel trucks
Heat is what kills transmissions, and towing makes heat. Diesel pickups put a lot of torque through their transmissions, whether it's a 68RFE or Aisin behind a Cummins or a TorqShift behind a Power Stroke. Clean fluid of the correct type, a healthy cooler and changing fluid on the severe-service schedule if you tow are the best protection. We'll check all three.
Manual transmission? See clutch repair. Driveline noise or vibration? See drivetrain and differentials.
Stopped in with no notice and the owner looked at my SUV, told me what the issue was, drained the excess fluid, cleaned up all the extra fluid off my motor so it wouldn't smell awful and worked me into his schedule later in the week! Very friendly, honest owner!
Transmission FAQ
Should I get my transmission fluid flushed?
It depends on your vehicle's service schedule, how you drive and the fluid's condition. We check the fluid and follow the manufacturer's recommendation, using the correct fluid type.
