Alternator, Battery & Charging System Repair
Dead battery, dim lights or a slow crank? We test the battery, alternator and starter first, so you don't buy a part you didn't need.
Your battery, alternator and starter work as a team. When one struggles, the others often get blamed. A new battery won't last if the alternator isn't charging it, and a new alternator won't help if something is draining the battery overnight. That's why we test the whole system before recommending a part.
Warning signs
- Slow or labored cranking, especially on cold mornings
- Clicking with no crank
- Battery or charging warning light on the dash
- Headlights and dash lights that dim at idle or flicker
- A whining or grinding noise from the alternator
- A battery that dies after sitting a day or two
- Swollen battery case or heavy corrosion on the terminals
What we do
- Battery testing under load, plus terminal and cable cleaning or replacement
- Battery replacement with the right size and cold-cranking rating for your vehicle
- Charging system test: alternator output, voltage regulation and belt condition
- Alternator replacement with quality parts
- Starter diagnosis and replacement
- Parasitic draw testing to find what's draining the battery with the key off
Diesel trucks and dual batteries
Most diesel pickups use two batteries to crank a high-compression engine and run glow plugs or a grid heater on cold starts. When one battery weakens, it drags the other down, so we test them as a pair and usually recommend replacing them together. Heavy-duty trucks with plows, lights or upfitter equipment also put extra load on the alternator; we'll check that it's keeping up.
Get ahead of winter
Missouri cold snaps are hard on weak batteries. A quick test in the fall can save you a no-start on the first frigid morning.
The folks at Elite Diesel are top notch! Great work at a great price. Definitely going back for any other issues with my other vehicles.
